The Cotton Exchange is an icon prominent in our Historic Downtown, representing its shipping era that was central to Wilmington’s successful port history. Looking at Wilmington’s past paints an important backdrop showing the circumstances under which the Cotton Exchange buildings evolved. They were saved from destruction in 1970 by Joseph Reaves and Malcolm Murray who restored them to their 1890 elegance. In this historic setting, today’s shoppers can enjoy a variety of stores and choice restaurants. It is the author’s hope that this overview of Wilmington’s past and of the Cotton Exchange restoration will encourage readers to value and protect our community’s heritage.
